FAQs
Is the water safe where your seaweed is harvested?
Absolutely. The safety and quality of the waters we harvest in are fundamental to everything we do. All of our seaweed is harvested by hand from carefully selected sites along the Cornish coast.
· These areas are Shellfish Classification A or B waters, which means they are regularly tested and monitored by the Port Health Authority for pollutants, bacteria, and contaminants.
· If any area doesn't meet the required standard, we do not harvest there until it is safe again.
· In addition to government monitoring, we carry out regular testing of our seaweed in independent accredited laboratories for:
o Heavy metals
o Harmful pollutants
o Microbial contaminants
We also follow organic certification standards, which prohibit the use of fertilisers, pesticides, or any chemical treatments. In short: our seaweed is clean, natural, and safe to eat.
Does seaweed absorb pollutants?
Seaweed is very efficient at absorbing nutrients from the water, such as nitrates, phosphates, and ammonia. These are naturally occurring and essential for plant growth.
These nutrients only become problematic when there’s an excess (often due to farm runoff), as they can contribute to harmful algal blooms. But unlike shellfish, seaweed does not accumulate the toxins that may be produced by some of these algae. In fact, seaweed helps reduce the risk of algal blooms by absorbing the excess nutrients.
Rest assured, our seaweed is:
· Non-toxic
· Lab-tested
· Safe for human consumption
Which type of seaweed is the most popular?
Our most popular seaweed is Dulse (Palmaria palmata).
· It has a rich, savoury flavour often compared to smoky bacon or dried mushrooms.
· It’s high in protein, iron, and other essential nutrients.
· Dulse is incredibly versatile – you can eat it raw, cooked, or dried. It makes a great addition to soups, salads, stir-fries, and even as a crispy snack!
We also offer other seaweeds such as Kelp (aka Kombu), Sea Spaghetti and Sea Lettuce (Ocean Greens) each with its own unique texture, flavour, and nutritional profile.
Do you grow or wild harvest your seaweed?
We practice sustainable wild harvesting. Our team harvests seaweed by hand in a way that allows it to regrow naturally, without damaging the marine environment. We do not use fertilisers, pesticides, or artificial growing methods – just clean Cornish waters and traditional harvesting methods.
Are your products organic?
Yes! All of our seaweeds are certified organic by the Soil Association. This means we follow strict standards for:
· Harvesting locations
· Processing methods
· Environmental sustainability
· Water and product safety
